How to Get to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo? Summary of Recommended Access Methods [For Beginners]
When visiting Japan, "Mt. Fuji" is a must-see at least once.
But many people wonder, "Where's the best place to view it?" and "How do I get there?"
Here, I'll introduce easy ways to access the Mt. Fuji area from Tokyo.
1. Where is Mt. Fuji Located?
Mt. Fuji is Japan's highest mountain (3,776m), straddling Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures to the west of Tokyo.
The main bases for sightseeing and climbing are primarily the Yamanashi side (Fuji Five Lakes area) and the Shizuoka side (Fujinomiya and Gotemba areas).
2. The Most Popular is the "Fuji Five Lakes Area" (Kawaguchiko)
・Good access from Tokyo, with plenty of photo spots where Mt. Fuji looks beautiful.
・Abundant tourist facilities and accommodations.
Access Methods:
・From Shinjuku Station, about 2 hours by the "Fuji Excursion" limited express (to Mt. Fuji Station or Kawaguchiko Station)
・Or by highway bus (from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station) for about 2 hours
Recommended Tourist Spots:
・Kawaguchiko (Popular for the lake and Mt. Fuji combination)
・Arakurayama Sengen Park (Stunning view of the five-story pagoda and Mt. Fuji)
・Fuji Subaru Line Fifth Station (Limited to summer, popular with climbers)
3. For Climbing Mt. Fuji, "Fujinomiya Trail" or "Yoshida Trail"
For those who want to actually climb Mt. Fuji, the following trails are used.
・Yoshida Trail (Yamanashi side): Bus from Kawaguchiko Station to "Fuji Subaru Line Fifth Station"
・Fujinomiya Trail (Shizuoka side): Bus from Shin-Fuji Station to "Fujinomiya Fifth Station"
※Climbing season is from early July to early September each year. Advance reservations and proper gear are required.
4. For Day Trips, "Gotemba Premium Outlets" or "Fuji-Q Highland"
・Recommended for those who want to enjoy Mt. Fuji views while shopping or at an amusement park.
・Mt. Fuji as seen from Gotemba is particularly beautiful and well-regarded.
Mt. Fuji is full of charm not just for climbing, but as spots to view, photograph, and enjoy.
For first-timers, starting from the accessible Kawaguchiko area is reassuring.
