Kyoto's summer is extremely humid and stuffy, isn't it? Nevertheless, it's also true that there are landscapes and events that can only be seen during this season. This time, I'll introduce tourist routes and tips to enjoy summer in Kyoto while staying as cool as possible ♩

First and foremost is the Kibune area. The temperature is about 2–3 degrees lower than in central Kyoto, and the kawadoko (riverside dining) restaurants lining the river look refreshingly cool. The cold flowing somen noodles are a summer-only delight. If you make a reservation early, you can avoid the crowds and enjoy it before the lunchtime peak.

Next, I recommend the Tadasu no Mori forest at Shimogamo Shrine. Tall trees grow thickly, and just walking through provides continuous pleasant shade. It's rare for summer Kyoto, but you can experience the sensation of your sweat receding.

Spots like Sanjusangendo Hall and the Kyoto National Museum, where you can leisurely view indoors, are strong allies. The appeal is that you can avoid the strong sunlight while touching on culture and history.

Also, during the after-festival of the Gion Matsuri (late July), you can enjoy the yamaboko parade in a calm atmosphere with fewer stalls. For those concerned about crowds, this period is a better bet.

For heat measures, it's recommended to use cooling goods or bring a frozen tea PET bottle. Also, around Kyoto Station or Kawaramachi, the trick is to combine a "shade route" by cleverly using underground passages and department stores.

Summer in Kyoto is harsh, but in return, unique landscapes and experiences await. How about enjoying a journey seeking coolness while skillfully dealing with the heat?
